GOOD GOLLY MISS MILEY

May I have your attention, please? Because Miley Cyrus is having a moment. With the announcement of her upcoming alternative rock album Plastic Hearts, fans are shivering with anticipation. To promote the album, she is showcasing her raw vocal talent with various cover performances. She has been dominating the game with performances such as her MTV Unplugged set, a BBC Lounge performance, and appearances on both The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and the iHeartRadio Festival. With each set, she’s been doing her own powerhouse take on classic rock covers, with her selection of music telling a story of growth. It’s the best one-woman show in ages, and the secret ingredient to these viral moments is her fashion. Her recent looks are a visual whirlwind of campy animal prints, glitter and jet black shimmer, and a blonde mullet to top it off. It’s the best Miley era yet, as she has come into her own element after years of experimenting with different styles and genres, some that have found her in a boiling pot of controversy. So, may I present the ultimate ranking of Miley Cyrus’s looks worn with her recent covers.

It’s the best Miley era yet, as she has come into her own element after years of experimenting with different styles and genres, some that have found her in a boiling pot of controversy. So, may I present the ultimate ranking of Miley Cyrus’s looks worn with her recent covers.

5.) I Got So High That I Saw Jesus

The soulful sister duet is one of the more touching moments in Miley’s unplugged set. With the emphasis being on the psychedelic spirituality of the song, Miley strips back the flashy style for a less-is-more approach. Both are dressed up in coordinating sister outfits with their slinky latex pants, black blouses and an army of glitzy rings and tattoos. The all black ensembles compliment the neon green jungle background, creating a psychedelic dream sequence. It’s a tender moment in the show, depicting Miley’s maturity and softness as she gently shares the stage with her little sister Noah and gives reassuring glances. It is a duo of sisterly solidarity and strength, with a back in black attitude. Miley and Noah are actually very similar in the sense that they have both been called out for their provocative outfits. Noah has recently made headlines for her sheer western bodysuit worn during her CMA’s performance, but she blew off the controversy and took a cue from her older sister with the declaration of my body, my choice. Both are not afraid to express themselves and their sexuality in their fashion, whatever the occasion may be.

4.) Zombie

With her black marabou fur coat and Ashley Williams’ bedazzled angel energy mini dress, Miley looks like a country music outlaw. She tops off the yeehaw-inspired look with tousled locks and a smokey eye. This look in particular is a callback to her first MTV Unplugged set, one where she wore a bedazzled denim bikini top and baggy pants and later a hot pink cowgirl suit. It brings me back to her campy country nods then, and during her Younger Now era. The best part about her recurring all-black-everything fits is the meaning behind them. Recently, Miley has gone through a public divorce from a partner of 10 years and lost her home to the California wildfires. On a somber note, the black symbolizes mourning, losing a part of herself and going through seasons of change. Yet on a brighter note, the color black symbolizes a sense of strength, power and rebellion. This look represents the latter, as she marches to the beat of her own drum after going through hell, sashaying in her big fur coat and giving a gut-wrenching performance.

3.) Just Breathe/Communication/Sweet Jane

Miley knew what she was doing when she chose to wear this banger dress for three songs. The discotheque snakeskin metallic halter is to die for, especially when it’s glistening during golden hour. Thanks to Versace, she looks like the punk Medusa, a chain-mail fashion warrior. For accessories, she has a collection of gold cocktail rings, strappy black stilettos, and a snake-like arm cuff. It may sound like a lot on paper, but Miley has this natural swagger in her presence and style where she is effortlessly cool. She has the magic woman vibe just like Stevie Nicks, singing songs of sorrow while defying fashion gravity.

2.) Maneater

Talk about a devil in a new dress. To complement her fiery take on the Hall & Oates classic “Maneater”, she wore a sparkling ruby red dress, reminiscent of Dorothy’s magical slippers. The story of Oz is the perfect analogy for Miley’s career. Once a little country girl from Tennessee, she went to her own land of Oz–Hollywood–to pursue her dream of stardom and become one of the most iconic musicians of her generation, and have the iconic outfits to match. Her Jean Paul Gaultier frock is also reminiscent of southern rock legend Tina Turner, who is notorious for her little red dresses and rock’n’roll chicness. There is the perfect juxtaposition of rebel and romantic, the vivacious hue being full of passion and love, while the mini hemline exposing her gazelle-like legs exudes sex appeal. Truly the best of both worlds.

1.)Heart of Glass

Finally, the crème de la crème of Miley’s fits and covers, her instantly iconic and showstopping Heart of Glass rendition was perfectly combined with a femme fatale Mugler look. Her sheer black catsuit fit like a glove, her wrists were decked out in silver jewels, and there was the red peep show of her Christian Louboutins–proving once and for all she is the ultimate rock diva. It’s classic Miley, with her naked illusion look pushing boundaries per usual and her risque aesthetic leaving the internet speechless. This look reminds me of all the ghosts of Miley’s past coming together in the best way possible. From head to toe, there is a reference to every past era. The blonde hairdo is a callback to her childhood Hannah Montana wig, the strong eye makeup, and red lip is a callback to her southern childhood, the midnight black hue is a callback to her Can’t Be Tamed days–embracing maturity with a darker sound, while the sheer fabric and body tight tailoring is a callback to the provocativeness of her Bangerz days. After years of experimenting with different styles, it looks like Miley has finally found one that suits her best, by taking the strongest motifs from her past phases and combining them into a heavenly rock and roll goddess.
